Robert Hood releases new album ‘Omega’

ARTIST: ROBERT HOOD TITLE: OMEGA LABEL: M-PLANT CATALOGUE: M.PM8 FORMAT: 3 X VINYL / CD / DIGITAL RELEASE DATE: 21 JUNE 2010

Robert Hood returns after last year’s ‘Minimal Nation’ re-issue with his new artist album ‘Omega’.

The album is based on the 1971 classic science fiction film, ‘The Omega Man’ starring Charlton Heston and derived from Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel ‘I Am Legend’ (which was recently re-adapted to the big screen). The album is not intended as an exact soundtrack to run alongside the original film, but Hood was heavily influenced by the movie and has used it as his inspiration.

This album’s concept is a long-held vision of Hood’s and the film’s stimulus has presented itself both musically here, and even spiritually for him, since he watched it as a child. Its themes appear even more relevant today and continue to haunt: “it’s definitely metaphoric,” he says “and if we don’t heed the signs, this is where we’ll end up. We live in a society where we just consume. We just take. We don’t operate on the concept of giving”.

The film resonated with him down the years and there are many parallels between the post apocalyptic world portrayed in the film and parts of Detroit where he grew up. “You can look at downtown Detroit at night after the nine to five have migrated home and it turns into a ghost town,” he muses. “You had abandoned buildings during the crack epidemic and this progressive city had these ‘zombies’ walking the street. Detroit is a prophetic vision of the sign of things to come.”

Whilst the brooding ‘Towns That Disappeared Completely’ and laser-strafed ‘War In The Streets’ certainly brings these comparisons together, the album still remains a work of science fiction, albeit one rooted in decaying urban realism as opposed to otherworldly fantasy. Tracks such as ‘Are You God?’ delve into the ‘messiah complex’ of Charlton Heston’s last man on earth battle to save humankind from the infected inhabitants of earth whilst the album’s preceding single ‘Alpha’ is dancefloor minimalism at its finest – yet another lesson in stripped down machine funk. Floating between cinematic experimentalism ‘The Plague (Cleansing Maneuvers)’, low-key minimal grooves ‘The Workers of Iniquity’ and pure dancefloor adrenalin rush ‘Omega (End Times)’ Robert Hood gives us another minimal masterpiece.

As Hood himself concludes. “This movie is an exercise in faith. Everybody is dead. Through all this adversity there is still hope but man has to repent. This is a message of hope and through the adversity people will begin to look at a higher force.”

TITLE: CD TWELVE – presented by DJ Hell
FORMAT: 3 x CD / DIGITAL
LABEL: GIGOLO CAT: GIGOLO 268
RELEASE DATE: 15 JUNE 2010

‘IT’S HOUSE MUSIC AND WE KNOW HOW TO USE IT’ – DJ Hell

31 tracks, 17 exclusive and unreleased, 3 CDs, this is CD Twelve.

CD TWELVE is the latest installment in DJ Hells much lauded and highly anticipated annual selection and compiling of material from Gigolo artists, new and old. This year Hell has two themes, one is house music and the other is Vienna, both of which have contributed dramatically to the previous 18 months worth of output from both DJ Hell and International Deejay Gigolo Records. The most obvious evidence for this statement is the critically and commercially successful ‘Teufelswerk’ album from Hell. Mostly produced in Vienna by Hell and Peter Kruder, Christian Prommer and Roberto Di Gioia, the album reflects Hells history and affinity with electronic music providing some of the most memorable House moments of last year and a lot of the label’s output for the year to come. Peter Kruder was the first of the Vienna based collaborators to present his vision of house music in 2009 first with the EP Visions Ltd. which was later followed with the excellent ‘Hard To Find,’ a homage to the classic Birmingham based mail-order record store. Next to join the fray was Christian Prommmer, who presented his remix of a collaboration with Ivano Coppola called ‘Hot.’ This record is undoubtedly a classic house sound not just sonically but also in arrangement and production, taking a sample from Willie Ninja’s ‘Hot’ and building an infectious groove all around it. Christian and Hell soon identified an affinity with each others sound and chose to collaborate more on both co-productions and remix’s. On CD Twelve you will find one of their first outings, which is Hell’s remix of Peaches. As yet only released on Twelve inch this monster remix is one of 17 exclusive tracks on CD Twelve.

With this kind of activity in Vienna word spread fast, and similar producers caught wind, approaching Hell to release on Gigolo. Makossa and Megablast presented a sublime 12” for Gigolo in 2009 and have returned for CD Twelve with ‘Soy Como Soy’ feat. Cleydys Villalon. Three new talents and local boys Skwerl, Ken Haywakawa and Crazy Sonic surface on CD Twelve, presenting their debut releases for Gigolo with ‘Liron,’ ‘Trip To Amsterdam’ and ‘One Way Ticket’ respectively. One of Hell’s close friends Diskokaine presents an unreleased Skatebård remix of ‘Hall of Shame.’ It is this output specifically that Hell refers to when he speaks of the new sound of Austria and how it is being sculpted by Gigolo and how we want CD Twelve to serve as a benchmark.

It is with this in mind that we come to the other artists and tracks on this compilation. Chosen specifically to compliment this sound they are, at first glance, an interesting mix. But once you have listened to the album in its entirety it is easy to see the synergy that runs through it. Kick-starting the compilation is David Keno’s cover of Chic’s ‘Upside Down,’ which is a statement in itself. Known more for his ‘Big-On-The-Blogs’ alter ego Riva Star, this cover is not only much more reserved in its sound, but it undoubtedly a potential house classic. Following immediately with a classic house sound we see DJ Linus’ ‘Are You Ready…’ already a firm favourite with the a cross section of DJs from Brodinski to Matthew Dear, Danny Howells to Laurent Garnier. Next up is the infamous, and until now impossible to get hold of, Soulwax re-edit of Walter Murphys ‘A Fifth of Beethoven. For those in the know this has been a staple of many DJ’s across the world since its original form in the 70s, based around one of Vienna’s most important musical exports it is infectious and impossible to ignore. Play Loud. Next up we see a nasty dance floor affair called ‘I Piss You,’ from long-time Gigolo collaborator Marascia. Then we move onto one of two tracks that Hell recently discovered whilst providing the music for the Michalsky fashion show. The brief was Blog music and Hell discovered Fagget Fairy’s ‘Feed The Horse’ and Mintel Rose’s ‘Better Days,’ both highlights from January’s show. The former will be released on Gigolo later this year with a thumping remix from Hell and Christian Prommer. Familiar names and releases from Snuff Crew and Psychonauts follow kindly, previously released on Gigolo in the first half of 2010 to a fantastic response from DJ’s and press. New boy Axel Boman presents his vision ‘Azteca (Bitch Dub),’ this debut Gigolo release is the first of more from a artist with support from DJ Koze, Magda and Seth Troxler, to name a few. Next we have Oliver Ton and Ronald Christoph, who present two great house records on CD Twelve, the Toni Lionni remix of ‘Hasta el Fin’ and new track ‘Joint Venture.’ Another new Gigolo artist, New York based threesome ‘Vinyl Life’ spit and rap through their vision of the Goodlife, to a Kraftwerk sounding back drop – classic hip house style. Classic Gigolo artist UHU return with Faster Speedias as the final track for CD1.

The 2nd CD kicks off with Nick Coleman’s ‘This City I Love,’ a firm favourite with DJ’s Luke Solomon, Sian, Larry Tee and Timo Mass, to name but a few. Next up with G Man Vs Kusserow ‘New Vs Old,’ there is absolutely no debating the fact that this straight up house music, but as one half of LFO G Man has the credentials to argue it out with the best of us, but the music in this case does all the work for us. Next up we have Sei A’s ‘My Montage’ which was released last year in Gigolo to a ubiquitous response with features in DJ magazine and firm support across both Radio and DJ. Classic Gigolo artist Herman Schwartz present’s ‘All Alone’ a track firmly inspired by Farley Funkin Keith’s (Farley Keith Williams) ‘I Need a Friend.’

On the 3rd CD we find two new material from Lenoir&Meiton, who previously released on Gigolo late 2008 and make a welcome return to pre-empty their forthcoming album. One of 2009’s highlights was the release of the Kikumoto Allstars which one favor with everyone from Troy Pierce to DJ Mehdi who declared it the album of the year. The track ‘House Music’ was the first single from the album and was featured heavily on BBC Radio 1 and Friz FM to name a couple of choice stations. Finally we come to the icing on the cake, or the cherry, Hard Ton’s ‘Forever No More.’ Released in the first half of 2010 this brand new and extremely exciting artist for Gigolo Records immediately impressed the world of media with some great press from international music magazines like Mixmag to gay publications like Attitude.

CD Twelve is one of Gigolo’s most ambitious compilations to date not just in size, but because it is sculpted around a concept that started in Vienna whilst Hell worked on ‘Teufelswerk.’ The premise being that this is the sound of Gigolo ‘future’, so in this sense CD Twelve is 3 years in the making, predated by the critically acclaimed release of his own album then charted by the last 12 months of Gigolo releases, and now redefined by the imminent release of this compilation.

With a monsterous 800 new tracks to unveil we also welcome four new labels to the fold with open arms as Chaman Records, Ginger Duck, Opit and Scsi-av join the electronic evolution. Advanced kick things off with the mighty Sinister Remixes from Dare & Haste which is getting picked up across the board, from Laurent Garnier to Judge Jules, Dopefish continues his electro-house assault with Y.A.R.D.C.O.R.E, Compuphonic bring Factor City more future tech house winners and Ginger Duck get the party started with Nick Hollyster’s tech-house rhythms in ‘African Whistle’. EevoNext continue to show why they are ‘next’ level techno with the dub infused style of Art Bleek’s ‘Message to the Dreamer’ album, Laz’s Superstonic continue to re-write the rule book with Axiom’s ‘I Love’ house grooves, Clatterbox once again deliver the electronic goods on Z-Bop and nutempo show us once more why they are minimal techno’s brightest new stars with two new EPs of stunning quality. Phantasm hit us with a blizzard of electronic releases from the likes of Dynamo, Bliss, 220 Volts and many more, BIP fire in with the mighty Hit Selection Volume 1 and chart bound vision of D-Licious ‘I’ll Get It’, Crunchy bring their unique house style with Mustax’s ‘Off Season’ and Damon Vallero ventures into deep house territory with the ‘Clear Future’ EP on Downstream.

Chaman Records is a tech house label based in Spain, started in 2000 and gained a big reputation among DJs and specialized press from their first release. Having released six vinyl records between 2000 and 2004 from artists like Dj Mouse, 7th Heaven, Angel de Castro and the manager of the label, Higinio aka Chaman, after a long break they are back stronger than ever. Now with big names like Acumen, Matt Flores, Tom Wax and Franksen and also some of the best Spanish producers like David Herrero, Darkrow or Higinio, the manager of the label. www.myspace.com/chamanrecords ( http://www.myspace.com/chamanrecords ) Ginger Duck fell passionately in love with techno, house and tech house to bring about a collection of sounds that stand out from the masses. Strong, bold and unique, tracks.  Ginger Duck’s evocative, emotive melodies and hypnotic driving rhythms pluck heartstrings, release endorphins and expose you to a wave of new sounds handpicked from all over the world. Ginger Duck’s aim is to seek out the newest talent, also signing respected artists, to lead the way in years to come with imaginative, inspiring music that remains close to your heart. To be at the forefront of the tech house and techno scene. It is going to be an explosive first year for Ginger Duck Recordings. www.gingerduckrecordings.com ( http://www.gingerduckrecordings.com/ ), www.myspace.com/gingerduckrecordings ( http://www.myspace.com/gingerduckrecordings ) After a string of 12’s on a variety of labels including her own co-run (now defunct) Immigrant/ Imminent Recordings and an astonishing single on Planet Mu in late 2009, this double A of Picture/ Spectrums is Subeena’s debut release on her own Opit label. With support already from the likes of Jamie Vex’d, Surgeon, Laurent Garnier, Hudson Mohawke, Jackmaster, Bok Bok and Rob Booth we predict a bright future ahead for this genre-hopping label. http://www.myspace.com/opitrecords ( http://www.myspace.com/opitrecords ) Scsi-av was set up by Daz Quayle to release records from a close family of electro and techno producers. Previously Daz had worked on various projects with Carl Finlow under guises such as Scarletron on Electron Industries and Il.ek.tro on Klang and needed an outlet for future works. In 2002 the mysterious detroit Duo ‘Ultradyne’ (Warp/Pi Gao) recorded a seminal 12″ for the label called unknown works and fellow producers recording for scsi-av in the early days were Carl Finlow, Nick Simpson (Rhythm invention on Warp/Hazed on Plus 8) and the prolific Wee DJs. Since then the label has released records by Luke Eargoggle, Mariel ITO and Automat. 2005 saw ex Skam artist ‘Made’ release an amazing double album called Tracktitle – an amazing mix of downbeat tracks driven by dirty hip-hop beats. One of the real gems for the label came in 2006 with the 1st installment for the ‘Lost Trax’ series, a series which is set to continue throughout 2010 and beyond. The idea behind the series is to anonymously release music from prolific techno producers who want to release high quality music regardless of current trends and do what they do best! www.scsi-av.co.uk ( http://www.scsi-av.co.uk/ ) Victor Popescu, otherwise known as ‘brazda lui novac’, has been making a name for himself in the emerging Romanian electronica scene for the last couple of years by producing his own act and helping others do the same. His music reaches out to all the electronica/shoegaze/ambient/drone musical cliques and it seems like its intention is to construct a cinema-scape of melancholy, moodiness and thought in the minds of its listeners. Victor started his own label this year, Square Sound Records, and is now involved in releasing organic, electronified haunting harmonies onto the digital market. www.squaresoundrecords.com ( http://www.squaresoundrecords.com/ )

With another 400+ tracks to sweat the dancefloor, its business as usual at EPM towers as we hit Miami with a storm of hot new releases. Talking of which we have the rather timely ‘WMC Miami 2k10’ from Banshee Worx and Bonzai Music, showcasing the labels hottest new house tracks for the legendary US music conference and we also find La Musique du Beau Monde hitting the house floor running with Les Mecs ‘Don’t You Want Me’ and a new label compilation, aptly titled ‘Cool Music For Cool People’ that takes house, breaks, electro and latin influences under its wing. Orlando Voorn’s ‘Nightvision’ imprint was exactly that…a futuristic label destined for the early hours and beyond and we see a welcome return with remixes from the likes of Ken Ishii, Quantec, Chez Damier and Orlando himself of classic techno cuts from the label’s archives. Curser Minor makes a new foray into the world of electronica as ‘Shakin Heathens’ gives us a taster of this summer’s new album on Uncharted Audio, the Space DJz drop a double whammy on Potential with two new explosive techno EPs and the ever dependable nutempo show us what minimal is all about with a new release from Mindcurve. What then follows can only be described as an Irish invasion! Nice N Nasty hit us with four new releases from the likes of T-Polar, Orlando Voorn (busy boy!) and Itokim as well as a new compilation in the shape of ‘Katsuhiko presents Pentacle’ and then Dublin Xpress pile on the oirish pressure with a further five new releases of prime time house, techno and electro to boot. Keeping their techno in the ‘banging’ category, fellow Space DJ Jamie Bissmire unleashes a label compilation on his own 50Hz imprint, showcasing an array of beats that could floor a rhino at 20 paces, Dopefish Audio continue their unique take on electro-house with Tuff Wheelz’s ‘Renegades EP’, Clonk’s Nutmann finds his minimal ‘Glory Hole’ and we round things off with another Miami bound package courtesy of LS City Records and their house stylin’ Miami WMC 2010 Sampler. See you by the pool!

Hearing is believing… www.myspace.com/keyrec ( http://www.myspace.com/keyrec ) Electronic music should not be limited to one style and certainly should not be limited to electronics. The Lydian Label was setup up with the kind of music in mind that incorporates electronics, live instrumentation and innovative sounds, but remains fresh and listenable. Truly putting the ‘I’ in to IDM is the name of the game, but we don’t want to pigeonhole specific genres at this stage, as long as the music fits then it is the Lydian style. First release coming from the artist Laszlo, with his unique blend of live recorded instruments and electronics. Expect more releases from him later in the year, along with collaborations with a number of musicians and the producer Todd Baker with their ‘Music Box Project’ and further release from Evil Sun (bass player/electronics in Bonobo), Lee J Malcolm and Schoolboy Error. A compilation showcasing remixes and other artists will also appear later in the year. www.myspace.com/laszloproductions ( http://www.myspace.com/laszloproductions )
